In today’s era, many employers are having a difficult time filling their open positions. This means that individuals who are looking for jobs might have more power than they realize. This includes when it comes to the negotiation of benefits.

Sadly, according to one survey, the majority of workers do not negotiate for better pay when they receive a job offer. It might surprise some people to learn that employers are usually willing to entertain a counteroffer; however, potential employees need to know how to negotiate for better benefits.

Go In With the Right Attitude

Before any negotiation starts, it is important for a potential employee to check their attitude at the door. Remember that a potential employer should never be seen as an adversary. Both parties are on the same side. Therefore, be sure to show enthusiasm for the new job. Let the employer know that the job is desirable. Try to phrase everything in a pleasant manner and emanate an attitude of optimism. With the right frame of mind, the negotiation has a higher chance of being favorable.

Do Research Ahead of Time

Information is power and everyone should take the time to figure out what they’re worth. Come into the negotiation knowing what the average salary is for that given position. Know how much someone gets paid at various experience levels. This will help everyone figure out whether or not they’re receiving a fair offer. 

Be Sure To Consider Other Benefits

Finally, remember that salary is only one factor when it comes to compensation. Do not solely focus on this number. Think about other benefits as well including end-of-year bonuses, profit sharing, and even signing bonuses. The total compensation is critical when considering any benefits package. Think about negotiating for added vacation time, more personal days, and even stock options if they’re available.

Be Patient

Finally, don’t simply accept the first offer. It is fine to thank the hiring manager and then go home to think about it. While it is a good idea to respond within 24 hours, there is nothing wrong with taking a few hours to consider the offer.
